光緒 Guangxu Clair de Lune Horse's Hoof (Ma Ti Zun) Vase

An unusual vase with an oviform body tapering to a cylindrical neck, called by the Chinese, a horse's hoof shaped vase (Ma Ti Zun). On the shoulder a qilong (chilong) with a lingzhi spray in its mouth is applied, the details of the molded bifurcated dragon lizard are painted in iron red, the eyes picked out in black and white enamels. The vessel is covered in an even sky blue clair de lune glaze stopping neatly at the foot revealing the smooth compact white paste. The base is covered in a clear glaze over the six character underglaze blue apocryphal kaishu mark of  the Kangxi Emperor.
A very similar vase is illustrated in Christie's London, An Exhibition of  Imperial Wares From the Robert Chang Collection, 2-14 June 1993, No 42.
